Overview

Plants and microorganisms have had a fundamental impact on the evolution of life on Earth. Through plant-microbial interactions, plants interact with beneficial or harmful microorganisms in their environment, which affect the growth and health of the plant. Microorganisms can provide essential nutrients or help protect plants from pests and diseases. However, some microorganisms can also cause diseases, resulting in significant economic losses. Understanding these interactions is key to developing sustainable and efficient agricultural systems, making plant-microbial interactions a vital part of modern crop production. The use of beneficial microbes to improve plant health and increase yields has advanced hugely in recent years due to advances in biotechnology and our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of this interaction. The use of beneficial microbes in crop production can increase water holding capacity, reduce fertilizer requirements, and improve stress tolerance, among other benefits. Plant-microbial interactions are thus crucial in the development of new approaches to sustainable agriculture.
