Neuro Cognitive Disorder
Neuro Cognitive Disorder (NCD) is an umbrella term used to refer to a set of neurological conditions that affect cognitive processes such as memory, language, attention, problem solving and motor skills. NCDs can make it difficult to complete daily tasks, carry out normal activities and interact with others. Possible causes of NCD may include strokes, head injuries, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. NCD is a significant concern as it can impact an individual’s quality of life, significantly reduce their independence and autonomy, and can even lead to premature death. Treatment of NCD typically involves a combination of cognitive, behavioural and pharmacological therapies. Therapy may also include the use of assistive technology, such as computer-based cognitive training and speech recognition software, to assist with daily activities. Early diagnosis and continuous monitoring are essential for effective management of NCD and should be coupled with multidisciplinary support from families, physicians and care providers.
