Immunology of Aids
Immunology of AIDS is the study of how the immune system is affected by acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Scientists use immunology to understand the mechanisms of how HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, weakens the immune system and to develop therapies and preventative measures to combat the virus. Immunological research has allowed for the identification of markers and proteins on the surface of HIV that can be used to diagnose the virus in individuals. Furthermore, immunology is used to inform the development of vaccines, treatments and drugs to prevent and manage HIV and AIDS. By understanding the dynamics of the immune system, researchers are able to identify strategies to improve immunity in people living with the virus, which increases their quality of life, reduces transmissions of the virus and minimises morbidity and mortality associated with AIDS. Immunology of AIDS is an important area of study that provides vast potential for improvement in the health of individuals and populations worldwide.
