Hyperbaric Nursing

Hyperbaric nursing is a specialized area of nursing that requires a unique set of skills and knowledge related to the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber for treatment of a variety of health issues. HBOT has been used to treat diseases and conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness, serious non-healing wounds, burns and radiation injuries, and other acute and chronic medical illnesses. Hyperbaric nurses are responsible for providing safe and effective HBOT to patients and closely monitoring them during treatment. They must have a thorough understanding of the physiology of oxygen in the body and recognize the risks associated with HBOT including oxygen toxicity. Hyperbaric nursing is a critical component of the healthcare team and plays an important role in providing exceptional care to patients receiving HBOT.
