Strongyloides

stercoralis Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal parasite of humans and animals that can cause serious illness in both. It is an organism that lives in the small intestine and is spread through contact with soil or feces contaminated with its larvae. In humans it can cause a range of symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and a variety of other gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases it can cause a dangerous condition called Strongyloides hyper-infection syndrome which can be fatal if not treated correctly. Treatment is with a course of anthelmintics such as albendazole or ivermectin. Strongyloides stercoralis is particularly common in warm, humid climates and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
