Leptospira Interrogans

Leptospira interrogans is a type of spirochete, a group of spiral-shaped bacteria. It is a pathogen that causes a serious zoonotic infectious disease called leptospirosis, which is found in many animal species including humans. The disease is typically contracted through contact with water or soil contaminated with the bacteria or its excretion. Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, headaches, joint pain, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Treatment includes antibiotics and supportive care depending on the severity of the infection. Leptospira interrogans has an important role in human and veterinary medicine, as well as in environmental studies. It is used in diagnosis, vaccine development and studies of pathogenic mechanisms.
