Intracellular Pathogens

Intracellular pathogens are microorganisms which invade living cells and reside and replicate inside of them. Intracellular pathogens can cause a range of different diseases, ranging from acute, such as typhoid, to chronic, such as tuberculosis and HIV. The ability of intracellular pathogens to hide and replicate inside of the host cell makes them difficult to treat and makes them a very significant public health concern. As such, the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and processes of the interactions between intracellular pathogens and the host cell is critical in developing and designing new strategies for their diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
