Group b Streptococci
Group B Streptococci (GBS) are bacteria that are commonly found in the intestines, lower genital tract, and respiratory tract of healthy people. They can sometimes cause serious infections in newborns, pregnant women, and adults with weakened immune systems. GBS can cause a range of infections, including meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, and urinary tract infections. It is important to diagnose and treat GBS infections early to prevent long-term complications or death. Pregnant women should receive routine testing for GBS in the late third trimester of pregnancy to protect their newborns. Vaccines are being developed to prevent GBS infections in newborns.
