Dictyostelium Fruiting Body
The Dictyostelium fruiting body is a structure formed by the aggregations of cells of the protist Dictyostelium discoideum, when exposed to nutrient-limited conditions. It is composed of a sorus – a hard, protective shell containing spores and an inner stalk made up of dead cells. The fruiting body is the protective stage of the life cycle in which the cells can survive extreme conditions, such as drought, for long periods of time. It is also believed to provide a dispersal method for the species. Dictyostelium fruiting bodies can provide useful insights into a variety of biological processes, including development, genetics, and cell-cell interactions. Furthermore, they can be used as model systems for drug testing and as tools to study the mechanisms of aggregation and fruiting of multicellular organisms.
