Cytogenetics
Cytogenetics is a branch of genetics that focuses on the study of the structure and function of the cell’s chromosomes. It involves using molecular genetics, such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), to study chromosome organization, architecture, and gene expression. It is also used to diagnose genetic disorders and to analyze the role of genetics in the development of certain cancers. In addition, cytogenetics is employed in forensic science and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to determine paternity or ancestral lineage. By understanding the structure and function of chromosomes, scientists are able to gain better insight into the normal and abnormal processes of heredity and how genetic mutations may affect the development of diseases.
