Coxiella Burnetii
Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that is considered the most infectious agent known to humans. The bacterium is responsible for causing the zoonotic disease known as Q fever or query fever. Despite its high infectivity, infected patients usually experience a mild and self-limiting infectious disease. In some circumstances, a more severe clinical condition, including endocarditis and hepatitis, can be observed. Coxiella burnetii is able to survive in environments such as dust and soil, and is believed to be transmitted through contact with animals, especially livestock, or the inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Therefore, this bacterium can be an important occupational hazard for veterinarians and farmers, as well as people who work in contaminated environments. This bacterium can also be used in bioterrorism activities due to its high infectivity and resistance to environmental conditions. Therefore, research on Coxiella burnetii should be conducted in order to better understand this pathogen and to develop efficient diagnostic tests and treatments.
