Corynebacterium Diphtheriae
Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a Gram-positive bacterium that is the primary cause of diphtheria, an infectious disease that affects the respiratory system. Corynebacterium diphtheriae is highly contagious, and can spread through coughing, sneezing, and close contact with an infected person. If left untreated, diphtheria can cause serious complications, including paralysis, heart failure and death. Vaccines are available to protect against infection, but it is important to receive regular booster shots and follow the recommended schedule for protection. Vaccines are the mainstay of prevention, but it is also important to practice good hygiene and be mindful of signs of infection that can include sore throat, low-grade fever, swollen glands and a thick, gray coating in the throat. Early treatment with antibiotics can help to prevent long-term complications.
