Collagenases
Collagenases are enzymes that break down the protein collagen, found in the extracellular matrix of many types of tissues. Collagenases have been studied for their potential use in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and to reduce tissue fibrosis. Furthermore, collagenases are also utilized in the biotechnology and cosmetic industry as a means to obtain collagen from animal tissues. This collagen is then used in products such as skin creams and wrinkle treatments. Collagenases are increasingly important in medical research and therapy, as they allow scientists to target and breakdown specific molecules in the extracellular matrix, further advancing our understanding of how tissues are formed, develop and respond to injury.
