Citrullination
Citrullination is an important post-translational modification of proteins which involves the conversion of an arginine amino acid to a citrulline amino acid. This modification can affect the structure, stability, and activity of proteins, and has been implicated in a variety of disease processes. For example, citrullination is involved in the pathology of rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. It has also been linked to autoimmune and inflammatory responses. In addition, citrullination has been used as a diagnostic and prognostic tool, allowing for the targeted identification and tracking of affected proteins. As such, citrullination is a powerful and important process in the field of biomedical research.
