Burkholderia Mallei
Burkholderia mallei is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium of the genus Burkholderiacaea. It is an obligate pathogen responsible for the disease glanders in humans, horses and other animals. The bacteria possess a capsule and several virulence factors which are responsible for its pathogenicity. It is spread through contact with infected animals, contaminated soil and drinking contaminated water. Glanders is a highly contagious disease and can be fatal if left untreated. Treatment for B. mallei infection includes a combination of antibiotics and drugs, as well as supportive care. Vaccines are available for horses, but not for humans. Improved diagnostics, prevention and control of B. mallei infections are necessary to reduce the prevalence of this highly contagious and deadly disease.
