It is an important indicator of water quality and has been used to test the efficiency of water treatment systems. The presence of this bacteria can be used to identify contaminated sources of drinking water, and it has a significant effect on the food safety of seafood. It is also an important species in the study of ecology, microbial diversity, and microbial biotechnology.
