Abdominal Effusions

Abdominal effusions are fluid accumulations in the abdomen that can occur with a variety of diseases. They can be classified into exudates (with high protein content) and transudates (with low protein content). Diagnosis is usually done with the aid of imaging and laboratory tests. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and can range from conservative measures such as diuretics to more invasive treatments such as thoracentesis or paracentesis. Abdominal effusions can be a sign of serious diseases and prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential to improve patient outcomes.
