cholerae Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium that is responsible for causing the highly contagious and life-threatening diarrheal disease, cholera. V. cholerae is transmitted through the contaminated water or food, mainly due to the lack of proper sanitation and hygiene. Vaccines and antibiotics play a major role in controlling the spread of this infection. In addition, public education on sanitation and hygiene is essential for the prevention of cholera outbreaks.
