Translocations

Translocations are genetic rearrangements where segments of chromosomes have been exchanged between two non-homologous chromosomes, resulting in an altered gene structure and expression. As a result, translocations are associated with genetic disorders and can also cause infertility and birth defects. Translocations also play a role in the evolution of species as they create new genetic combinations and can cause genetic variants. Translocations may also be harnessed for therapeutic purposes, such as gene therapy to correct genetic disorders. Thus translocations are a crucial area of research for both medical and evolutionary purposes.
