C Banding

C banding is a type of chromosomal study used to identify and analyse the structure of chromosomes. It utilises the staining method of Giemsa, which reveals a bright band pattern on chromosomes. The C bands are the dark, densely stained regions and are composed of DNA-rich heterochromatin. The lighter-stained regions, called G bands, are composed of repetitive DNA and genes, which contain the genetic information. C banding gives information about the structural characteristics of chromosomes and can be used to investigate mechanisms of genetic activity such as gene expression or recombination. It is a valuable tool for genetic research and is commonly used to identify chromosome abnormalities and to study the evolution of chromosomes.
