Yaws

Yaws is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria. It is the second-most common non-venereal treponemal disease after syphilis, and is a major health problem in developing countries. Yaws affects mainly the skin, bones and joints, and can cause long-term disfigurement and disability. It is spread through direct contact with the skin lesions of an infected person. Treatment with antibiotics, such as penicillin, is highly effective. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid long-term complications and the risk of transmission to others. Yaws can be prevented through public health campaigns to inform people about the disease and to encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
