Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is the harmful use of drugs and alcohol for nonmedical purposes. It is a major public health issue and can lead to serious physical and mental health problems, as well as social, economic and legal consequences. Substance abuse is associated with the development of addiction, which is a chronic and relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. Substance abuse treatment and prevention efforts are important to reduce the health, social and economic burden of this preventable disorder.
