Acromegaly
Acromegaly is a disorder of the endocrine system that is caused by an excess of growth hormone production. It is most often caused by the non-cancerous growth of a tumor on the pituitary gland and is characterized by gradual changes to the face and extremities, such as an increase in the size of hands and feet, as well as an enlargement of the jaw and forehead. Acromegaly can also cause excessive sweating, fatigue, headaches, and a change in vocal pitch. Left untreated, it can lead to joint and muscle pain, heart disease, diabetes, and an increased risk of death. Early diagnosis and treatment of acromegaly is essential for preventing the long-term complications associated with the disorder. Treatments typically involve medications and surgery, as well as lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet, exercise, and stress management. With proper care, the symptoms of acromegaly can be managed and the risk of complications can be minimized.
