Mineral Metabolism and the Kidney
Mineral metabolism and the kidney work together to maintain the body’s mineral balance and homeostasis. The kidney helps regulate the balance of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium through the process of reabsorption, an active transportation process that draws minerals from the urine back into the body. Deficiencies or imbalances in mineral levels can result in disorders such as rickets and osteoporosis, which is why this process is so essential. The kidney also helps regulate electrolyte levels and thus maintains normal pH, both of which are essential for normal body function. Overall, mineral metabolism and the kidney play a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy by regulating the balance of minerals and electrolytes.
