Glycogen Metabolism
Glycogen metabolism is the process of breaking down and synthesizing glycogen, an energy-storing molecule found in the liver cells and muscle cells of animals and humans. This metabolism plays a major role in energy storage and utilization in the body, providing energy between meals and during physical activity. Glycogen metabolism is regulated by hormones, including insulin, glucagon, epinephrine and cortisol, and is also influenced by various environmental factors such as stress and diet. Malfunctions in glycogen metabolism can lead to various metabolic disorders, including diabetes, obesity and hypoglycemia.
