Glycocalyx
The glycocalyx is a layer of molecule-rich, sugar-based carbohydrate molecules surrounding the surface of cells and other structures in the body. It helps to protect cells from dehydration and creates an adhesive surface that allows cells to interact with each other and their environment. It also plays an important role in cell signaling, immune regulation, cell adhesion and the recognition of foreign substances. It is vital for maintaining the structural integrity of cells, and participates in the recognition, transport, and a variety of other cellular activities. The glycocalyx is an important component of organisms that live in aquatic, physiological and microbial environments. Its importance in immune defense and cell-cell communication makes it a fundamental part of all living organisms.
