Glycemic Index
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a relative ranking of carbohydrates in foods according to how quickly and how much they raise blood sugar levels. This information can help people better manage their diabetes and other nutrition-related health conditions. GI is a useful tool when carb counting because it gives an indication of the food's potential impact on blood sugar levels. Foods with a lower GI rating are slowly digested and absorbed, leading to a gradual rise in blood sugar, while foods with a higher GI rating are quickly digested and absorbed, leading to a rapid rise in blood sugar. Knowing which foods have a higher or lower GI can help people with diabetes, or those trying to lose weight, choose foods that are more likely to keep their blood sugar levels in check.
