Overview

Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in the immune system by destroying infected or damaged cells. They are generated when antigens are presented to them by antigen presenting cells, causing them to undergo a maturation process which results in the formation of cytotoxic T-cells. These cells circulate in the blood and are activated once they come into contact with a cell displaying the specific antigen they are programmed to recognize. Upon activation, they release molecules that can cause the cell to lyse, or break apart. Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes are part of the body's natural defense system and are crucial for fighting off pathogens and other invading entities. They are also used in the treatment of certain types of cancers by targeting specific antigens associated with cancerous cells.
