Transition to Parenthood
Transition to parenthood is a term used to describe the physical, psychological and social changes experienced by new parents and their families as they adjust to their new roles and responsibilities. It includes changes in physiology, such as hormonal changes during pregnancy and lactation, as well as psychological and social changes, such as dealing with the stress of newborn care and networking with other parents. Transition to parenthood has been found to have positive effects on parenting practices and child development, as well as reducing parenting stress. It is also associated with enhanced marital satisfaction and relationship satisfaction, greater satisfaction with work and leisure activities, and improved physical health and well-being. Transition to parenthood can be supported through various evidence-based programmes, such as birth classes, parenting classes, and support groups. These programmes can provide parents with necessary knowledge and skills to adjust to their new roles, whilst also providing them with emotional support.
