Mastectomy
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both breasts. It is usually done to treat cancer of the breast, and may also be done as a preventative measure for those at high risk of breast cancer. The significance of the procedure is that it can help to improve the survival rate of those with breast cancer, while also reducing the risk of recurrence. The removal of the breast can also provide psychological relief to those who are worried about the possibility of cancer in the future. Mastectomy is increasingly being coupled with reconstructive surgery for a more aesthetically pleasing result.
