Spinal Cord
injury Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a disruption of the nervous system caused by damage to the spinal cord, resulting in a loss of physical and/or sensory functions. Depending on the severity of the injury, the effects of SCI can include paralysis and loss of feeling and movement, as well as bladder and bowel control issues, difficulty with sexual functioning, and pain. SCI can profoundly impact someone’s life, making everyday activities more difficult. Treatment for SCI includes physical and occupational therapy, medications, and assistive technologies. While there is no single cure for SCI, advances in research and technology offer hope that improved quality of life and even functional recovery may be possible.
