Osteopenia
Osteopenia is a condition characterized by weakening of the bones, resulting in lower than normal bone density. It increases the risk of fractures and can be the precursor of osteoporosis. Osteopenia is common in older adults but can occur at any age due to a variety of causes, including low calcium intake, lack of exercise, certain medications and certain medical conditions. Diagnosis of osteopenia can be made through a bone density test, and management includes increased physical activity, healthy diet, and medications as needed. It is important to detect and manage osteopenia to reduce the risk of fractures and progression to osteoporosis.

Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside some of the bones in the body, including the hip and thigh bones. Bone marrow contains cells called stem cells. When disease affects bone marrow so that it can no longer function effectively, a marrow or cord blood transplant could be the best treatment option; for some patients it is the only potential cure.
