Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that mostly occurs in children. It develops in immature nerve cells in the sympathetic nervous system, which is a group of cells that control routine body functions. Neuroblastoma usually develops in the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys but it can also occur in other areas, such as the neck, chest, stomach, or spine. Neuroblastoma can be life-threatening and is responsible for the deaths of 15-20% of all cancer deaths in children, making it one of the most common childhood cancers. Treatment for neuroblastoma includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Early detection is the key for successful treatments, so it is important for parents and healthcare providers to be aware of the symptoms and signs of neuroblastoma and to seek early medical evaluation if necessary.
