Myelodysplastic Syndromes
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of rare blood disorders where the production of normal blood cells by the bone marrow is impaired. The decrease in healthy blood cells can lead to anemia, increased risk of infection, and bleeding. In some cases, MDS can progress to leukemia. Treatment of MDS is based on the severity of the disorder and may involve medications, transfusions, a bone marrow transplant, and chemotherapy. Early diagnosis and intervention can improve outcomes for people with MDS.
