Autologous Stem Cell Transplant
An autologous stem cell transplant is a type of transplantation that uses the patient's own stem cells instead of donated cells from another person. It is a medical procedure used to treat certain types of cancers and other blood disorders, such as multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndrome. Stem cells are immature cells that have the capability to develop into various types of blood cells. During an autologous stem cell transplant, the patient's own stem cells are collected, stored, and then reintroduced into the body. The reintroduction of the patient's own cells helps to restore the patient's blood cell production which has been damaged due to the cancer or blood disorder. Autologous stem cell transplants are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to reduce the risk of complications from the use of donor cells, as well as the fact that they do not require a donor.
