Sputum

Sputum is a type of mucus that is produced by the airways and is expelled through coughing. It is composed of mucus, saliva, and other components such as bacteria and cells from the airways. Sputum can be tested to help diagnose respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and cystic fibrosis. Tests can also be conducted to determine the presence of bacteria in the sputum to help guide treatment. Sputum analysis is a useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of various respiratory illnesses and can help the clinician make a more informed diagnosis.
