Mucus

Mucus is a thick, slimy secretion produced by mucous membranes that line cavities and surfaces of the body that come in contact with the external environment. It is essential to the protection and lubrication of these surfaces, helping to prevent infection and facilitating the passage of air, water, and food. Mucus also plays an important role in the functioning of the immune system. It serves as a barrier to restrict the entry of germs into the body, trapping pathogens and assisting in their removal. In addition, mucus contains proteins and antibodies which can act to neutralize toxins and enhance the activity of immune cells.
