Body Fluid Electrolyte Balance
The body fluid electrolyte balance is a term used to describe the body's maintenance of concentrations of electrolytes in the body's water compartments. Electrolytes are minerals, such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and others, that dissolve in body fluids and play important roles in body functions such as nerve conduction, muscle contraction, fluid balance, and acid-base balance. Homeostasis of the electrolyte balance is essential for healthy functioning, and any disruption of the balance can have serious consequences, such as dehydration, edema, and heart rhythm disturbances. Electrolytes can be modified through dietary intake, medications, and other interventions to help regulate the body's electrolyte balance. Additionally, regular monitoring of electrolyte levels can be necessary for those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease.
