Pharmacotherapy of Hypertension
Pharmacotherapy, or the use of medications to treat disease, is an important treatment for hypertension, or high blood pressure. Hypertension increases the risk of other health complications, such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage. Pharmacotherapy helps to lower elevated blood pressure to reduce or prevent these complications. Medications used to treat hypertension work by relaxing the walls of the blood vessels and reducing the amount of water and salt in the body. Commonly used classes of drugs include diuretics, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and beta-blockers. Each medication is chosen based on the individual patient needs and characteristics, taking into account their age, medical history, and any other medical conditions they may have. Additionally, lifestyle modifications, such as diet, exercise, and stress management, are also important to lower blood pressure and should be used in combination with medication.
