Protein Domains

Protein domains are small, independently folded, structurally and functionally distinct parts of a protein. They provide the protein with its three-dimensional structure and give it the ability to interact with other molecules. By understanding protein domains, researchers are better able to understand how proteins interact to carry out their specific functions inside the body. Protein domains are also important in understanding how medicines interact with proteins to achieve the desired effect. They are also used in the creation of new drugs, as well as in the design of new materials.
