Green Fluorescent Protein
Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) is a protein found in a jellyfish species that has become a powerful tool for biomedical and biological research. It emits a green light when exposed to blue light, making it a powerful reporter molecule for imaging and tracking cellular processes in living cells. GFP has found widespread use in the study of gene regulation, protein localization, and interactions of proteins with other molecules. It is also used to track the expression and activity of particular genes as they are switched on and off during development, or to monitor protein-protein interactions. GFP’s importance lies in its ability to provide an easy, intuitive, and non-invasive way to observe processes inside a cell, with varying applications in fields ranging from neuroscience to cancer research.
