Glycobiology
Glycobiology is an interdisciplinary field that studies the structure, biosynthesis and functions of carbohydrates (sugars, starches and other related molecules) in living organisms. Carbohydrates are very important for human health, and play an important role in cellular communication, recognition, and regulation. In addition, glycobiology is key in the development of new treatments for a number of diseases and conditions, including cancer, diabetes and autoimmune diseases. Glycobiology helps to better understand the complexity of biological systems, as well as to unlock new therapeutic targets and develop novel treatments.

Glycomics is particularly important in microbiology because glycans play diverse roles in bacterial physiology. Metabolomics combines strategies to identify and quantify cellular metabolites using sophisticated analytical technologies with the application of statistical and multi-variant methods for information extraction and data interpretation.
