Biomimetics
Biomimetics is a field of science that studies how nature has evolved solutions to complex problems over millions of years. It seeks to understand how plants, animals and other organisms solve their challenges and then apply the same solutions in order to improve the design of man-made materials, products and systems. By taking inspiration from natural structures and processes, biomimetics can help us to design more efficient, effective and sustainable solutions to our own technological problems. For example, it has been used to create surfboards and aircrafts inspired by shark skin, to develop sustainable farming practices based on the strategies of ants, and to create more efficient cooling systems based on the way spiders regulate their body temperature. The potential applications of biomimetics are endless, and its importance in helping us to create more sustainable solutions cannot be underestimated.
