Biocatalysis
Biocatalysis is a rapidly emerging technology which involves the use of enzymes, proteins and other biomolecules for a variety of industrial, medical and environmental applications. Its advantages over traditional chemical catalysts are numerous: biocatalysts are typically more specific, reagent sparing and environmentally friendly than their chemical counterparts. They can be used to perform complex chemical transformations, including the formation of previously unknown compounds, and can catalyse reactions which are either not feasible or not economically feasible with traditional catalysts. This makes biocatalysis a valuable tool in drug discovery, biomass conversion and renewable resource production, among other areas. The potential for biocatalysis is vast, making it an exciting field of research with wide-reaching implications.
