Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and managing diseases, injuries and other conditions of the eye. They use specialized medical instruments, surgical techniques and other treatments to diagnose and treat eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Ophthalmologists also perform laser eye surgery, which is used to correct certain vision problems, such as nearsightedness and astigmatism. Ophthalmology is an important specialty, as it helps to prevent vision loss and promote healthy eyesight.
