Ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis is a condition that occurs when the body produces high levels of ketone bodies, leading to a state of metabolic acidosis. It can be caused by a variety of factors ranging from uncontrolled diabetes, drug abuse or acute alcohol intoxication. It is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical care. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fruity-smelling breath and confusion. Treatment typically involves intravenous fluids and insulin to reduce the ketone levels. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of ketoacidosis early can help prevent serious complications and increase survival.
