Impaired Glucose Tolerance
Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) is a condition that occurs when the body fails to regulate glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream properly. It is a major risk factor for developing Type 2 Diabetes. People with IGT are more likely to develop diabetes and are at increased risk for other medical complications such as heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, and kidney disease. It is important to diagnose and treat IGT early in order to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and its related medical complications. Treatment typically involves lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking. Certain medications may also be used to help manage IGT.
