Rape and Sexual Assault
Rape and sexual assault are serious crimes that include unwanted sexual activity without consent. They can involve physical force, coercion, threats, and/or taking advantage of someone not able to give full legal consent. Research shows that the majority of victims of rape and sexual assault are female, but males can also be victims. Victims of rape and sexual assault can suffer physical and psychological trauma, including physical injury, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other psychological issues. Having an understanding of the prevalence, consequences, and legal options for those affected by rape and sexual assault can lead to better prevention, support services, and justice for victims.
