Impulsivity

Impulsivity is the tendency to act rapidly in response to environmental stimuli in a manner which is disproportionate to the situation. It is believed to be associated with a range of psychological and neurological conditions and is a risk factor for substance abuse and addiction. Impulsivity has been linked to the development of certain psychiatric disorders, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, and certain forms of anxiety. It has also been linked to impulsive behavior in everyday life, such as reckless driving and other activities which carry a risk of harm. Impulsivity can be viewed as both a symptom and a cause of various mental and physical disorders, as well as a potentially modifiable trait which can be altered with appropriate interventions. Through interventions designed to modify impulsivity levels, mental health professionals and clinicians can work to improve a person's quality of life.
