Thumb Arthritis
Thumb arthritis is a condition in which the joint of the thumb becomes inflamed due to the natural wear and tear of the joint cartilage. It is often a result of arthritis in the rest of the body, as well as repetitive use of the thumb such as texting or playing video games. Symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and difficulty with gripping. Treatment usually consists of rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), splinting, and physical therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to restore movement and flexibility. Thumb arthritis is an important condition to recognize, as it affects many people, including the elderly, and can have a large impact on quality of life. Early treatment and prevention is key to managing and reducing pain and disability.
